Cardiff Business School has a strong commitment to postgraduate research studies and widely recognised expertise across the whole business management research domain. Each year a number of full or partially funded PhD Studentships are available, from a variety of sources, for outstanding UK, EU or Overseas students.

Studentships may cover the cost of both tuition fees and a contribution towards living expenses for a maximum of three/four years. We are seeking exceptional applicants with a first class Honours degree (or equivalent), or a Masters degree with Distinction or equivalent. The Business School comprises five sections. [US] Research Scholarship in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Mississippi State University

Power and High Voltage Research Group in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department at Mississippi State University (MSU) seeking research assistants with monthly stipends of $1350- $1900 starting in Summer 2008/August 2008/January 2009.

Students with good academic records and research interest are encouraged to apply for Ph.D. and Masters degrees. Power, Control and High Voltage Research Group at MSU are top 5 funded power program among land grant universities in the USA according to the 2005-2006 IEEE Power Engineering Society Committee report (http://powerlearn.ee.iastate.edu/survey/pdf/resources05-06.pdf ).

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is the largest and one of the oldest academic units within the Bagley College of Engineering at Mississippi State University (MSU). Housed in the 95,000 square foot Simrall Building, the Department includes 28 faculty members, 12 administrative and research support staff members, and typically 650 students. The power, control and high voltage engineering group is one of the major emphasis areas within the department including 5 faculty. Located in the Simrall Building, the High Voltage Lab (HVL) is the largest independent high voltage laboratory in the U.S.

[Ireland] PhD Position in Applied Microeconomics at Trinity College Dublin

This project analyses the impact of recent policy changes on various aspects relating to the agri-food sectors in Ireland and other EU countries focussing in particular on Denmark and the Netherlands.

Using the Irish National Farm Survey a micro approach is taken that allows specific research questions relating to:

productivity and competitiveness
the changing structure of production systems in terms of farm numbers, the role of economies of scale, specialisation and system switching
the wider rural community to be addressed.

The availability of a comparable survey for Denmark and the Netherlands presents a unique opportunity for the Irish experience to be compared to that of similar regions of Europe facing the same set of constraints but with significantly different sectors in terms of structure, organisation and the role of government supports.

This study will provide valuable lessons for policy by deepening our understanding of the important issues facing the agri-food sector in Ireland at the micro level and observing how the Irish experience compares to that of similar European regions.

The project will also explore alternative uses for land post-decupling focussing in particular on opportunities in relation to organic farming and alternative energy sources drawing on the successes of the Danish experience.

The PhD student will be based at the Department of Economics, Trinity College Dublin. The student will spend some time at the Kent Business School in the UK and at the University of Wageningen in the Netherlands working with leading economists on farm survey data and project related modelling issues.

Requirements:

MSc degree or equivalent in Economics
An interest in applied microeconomics in particular agricultural or environmental economics
Excellent quantitative skills (i.e. econometric modelling).

Stipend:
€16,000 p.a. plus tuition fees

Duration of the contract:
3 years beginning April 1st, 2008
